The College of Fellows cordially invites all international fellows, university members and students to its semester opening event, with a Lecture by
Professor Vittorio Gallese:
"Embodying neural representations: Neural reuse and embodied simulation"
Fri, 26 April 2024, 4.00 pm
Alte Aula, Münzgasse 30, Tübingen
Vittorio Gallese, Professor of Psychobiology at the University of Parma, is recognised as one of the world's leading experts in the field of social neuroscience, and is among the discoverers of mirror neurons. In his research, he seeks to understand the functional organisation of brain mechanisms underlying social cognition, such as empathy and sympathy, language, and aesthetic experience. His interdisciplinary work incorporates findings and approaches from philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience. During the summer term 2024, Vittorio Gallese is guest professor and fellow at the College of Fellows at the University of Tübingen.
Lecture abstract:
In recent decades, technological advances have driven forward research into the brain in humans and animals. Nevertheless, a unified theory of brain function and its relationship to behavior is lacking due to different approaches and levels of description. Neural representation is a controversial topic in cognitive neuroscience, with diverse theoretical approaches ranging from the neo-phrenological method to dynamical systems theories. In Vittorio Gallese's lecture, embodied simulation theory will be discussed within the framework of neural recycling, where being, feeling, acting and knowing have a physical basis and brain architecture transcends conventional mental concepts.
The Lecture will be followed by a reception. The evening offers the opportunity to meet and network with both international and Tübingen based scholars and guests, and to learn about the College of Fellows programme and offers for international fellows currently based in Tübingen.
