Tübingen International Summer School (TISS) 2017

TISS 2017 takes place from Sept. 24-27. This years topic: 'Neural Prosthetics: From Restoration to Enhancement of Biological Systems? Perspectives from Science, Ethics and Philosophy'

The Tübingen International Summer School is a joint venture of FORUM SCIENTIARUM and the Werner Reichardt Centre for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) at the University of Tübingen.

Advances in neuroscience and technology are currently occurring faster than ever before and are reaching for goals that recently seemed unimaginable. These rapid developments in both regimes do also push forward the design of neural prostheses, which already have become feasible alternatives to aid people with neurological disorders. Currently, the primary function of such neural prostheses still is to restore the loss of sensory, motor or cognitive functionality in diverse patient populations. Yet, we already are at a stage where the development in brain-computer interfaces is seeking for tools to enhance and extend the capabilities of intact biological systems. What could be the next steps in the design of neural interfaces and what might be their impact on individuals and societies?

In this year’s TISS, we will present and discuss the basic science and methodology behind neural prosthesis. Current and future fields of application will be highlighted and critically discussed - also from the perspective of ethics and philosophy, including transhumanism. In this transdisciplinary setting we try to provide a broader view on the field of Neural Prosthetics and we will explore its perspectives, risks and promises.

Application deadline is July 15, 2017.  CALL FOR APPLICATION
